The Thrown Ups

The Thrown Ups was formed in 1984, the band was mainly known for having Mark Arm and Steve Turner in the lineup, both did not create the band but joined there later, and it happened while both musicians were playing in Green River. Another important thing to take in account is that The Thrown Ups used to improvised on the stage.

The first lineup (1984-1985) was:

  • Steve Mack, vocals
  • Mike Fallhauber, guitar
  • Leighton Beezer, bass
  • Scott Schickler, drums

On the other hand, Steve Mack moved to Europe and was replaced by Eddy Fotheringham. Steve Mack formed That Petrol Emotion.

Steve Turner took some time in order to take part in The Thrown Ups, but due to they improvised and did not compose. Steve Turner joined the band in 1985.

Mark Arm joined the band in 1986, replacing Scott Schickler. Mark was the drummer.

Lineup in 1986 and the most known was:

  • Eddy Fotheringham: vocals
  • Steve Turner: guitar
  • Leighton Beezer: bass
  • Mark Arm: drums
They used to open concerts for bands like Bundle of Hiss.

First The Thrown Ups single, Felch

They tried hard to get a deal with a label, and finally Steve Turner got it with Tom Hazelmeyer, founder of Amphetamine Reptile Records.

The first single called "Felch" was recorded on Jack Endino's studios at that time, the Reciprocal Recordings in Seattle. The single was released in early 1987.
  1. Felch
  2. Lard Butt
  3. Your Band Sucks
  4. She's Fat

The Thrown Ups returned to Reciprocal Studios some later to record another single.

The second single was recorded with the name of "Smiling Panties". It was released at the end of 1987 by Amphetamine Reptile.

  1. Elephant Crack
  2. My Cock Is The Coin
  3. Smiling Panties

The band was ready for another single, and they repeated the same steps done before, and the third single was released in February of 1998 by Amphetamine Reptile.

The single was "Eat My Dump".

  1. Eat My Dump
  2. Flubbermate
  3. Ladies Love Me
  4. Scabby Like My Love

The Thrown Ups were present at the album Sub Pop 200, the great compilation from the Seattle scene released by Sup Pop. The track was an outtake called "You Lost It".

Along 1987 Mark Arm and Steve Turner created Mudhoney with bassist Matt Lukin (Melvins) and drummer Dan Peters (Bundle of Hiss).

Steve Mack came back to Seattle and share a show night with The Thrown Ups at the Moore Theater.

Next to come was the compilation "Dope, Guns and Fucking in the Streets, Volume 1-3". It was released by Amphetamine Reptile in 1989.

Here was included a song from the recordings of single Felch.

It meant the farewell of the band during its lifetime.

Finally, the full lenght studio album was recorded, and it was at Reciprocal Records, thus to the Endino's reign.

"Melancholy GirlHole Box" was released in 1989 over Amphetamine Reptile Records too.

But it would not be the beginning of a long career, since Leighton Beezer fired Mark Arm and Steve Turner in 1991, blaming them to be sellouts.  Mark and Steve had put their efforts into Mudhoney.

Beezer formed two bands, El Grand Conquistador and Stomach Pump. Moreover he worked as developer for Microsoft.

Eddy Fotheringham changed his life to art, he worked some albums covers for Mudhoney and so on.

First and only studio album, Melancholy Girlhole
Then, after the breakup of The Thrown Ups, Amphetamine Reptile released "Seven Years Golden" on January 28, 1997.

Three bonus tracks were included on the album.

It has been the last release from the band since ever.
